My Rating: ★★★★
The Brave Yong Su Jeong (용감무쌍 용수정) is a South Korean melodrama that started airing on 6 May 2024 and lasted for 124 episodes.
About
Yong Su Jeong’s parents were killed in a mountain accident and while they were away mistreated by the woman who was supposed to look after her. She escaped a house fire and was then looked after a stranger who bought her up. Working for a company she was also mistreated but also started to fall for the handsome deputy in charge.
Cast
Uhm Hyun Kyung (엄현경) as Yong Su Jeong
I think this her first role post having a baby. I’ve seen her in other melodrama’s such as “Man in a Veil” and “Second Husband“. She won an MBC award for her performance in the show.
Seo Joon Young (서준영) as Yeo Ui Ju
He has appeared in other melodramas such as “Apple of My Eye” and “The Promise”. As I wrote this is her starring in “Queen’s House“. He won an MBC award for his performance in the show.
Im Ju Eun (임주은) as Choi Hye Ra
Award winning actress, seems to be her first role in a melodrama.
Kwon Hwa Woon (권화운) as Ju U Jin
Maybe his first role in a melodrama? His character became more prominent in the later part of the show. He has a YouTube channel, he appears to enjoy running, he is very good with the crowds.
Review
This was a typical makjong drama with elements you see in other Korean daily revenge shows. While the stories can be predictable many of them suck you in.
Many of them focus on a particular health condition and the choice of this one was brain cancer. I’m not sure how medically accurate the story was but the arc lasted a good portion of the show. From an emotional perspective it was pretty well done. Despite what other reviewers have said I thought the ending of that arc was well done. Uhm Hyun Kyung had her kick ass moments just like she did in Second Husband although the very short dresses seemed difficult to wear, Im Ju Eun had to wear the short skirts too, that is common in these show. It seems that most of the actors, whether they were main or supporting cast, got a good story line and an opportunity to act.
One of the shows best moments, in my opinion, was when the child actor Kim Tae Yeon sang. It was cute.
The beginning of the show had more comedic moments centered around the main character but that fell to others in the story line later on. There were good moments when the brothers supported each other.
The music was good and it led more towards the dramatic rather than an actual song with words, it matched what was going on in the screen. There appeared to be more incidental music available than other melodramas I have seen.
Summary
Overall this was a great drama that kept me hooked to the end. The downside was repetitive story lines within the show which is why I marked it down one, so I give it 4/5.
Where To Watch
I saw this show on Viki although it is available on Kocowa and Apple TV.
