The Sign

The Sign [ลางสังหรณ์] is an action, mystery, fantasy and LGBTQ drama from Thailand that was originally broadcast from Nov 2023 to Feb 2024.

About

For as long as Tharn can remember, he’s had premonitions about those around him, sensing both the good and the bad. Partners on a team of special investigators, when kind and cheerful Tharn met clever and charming Phaya, it felt as though they’d known each other for a long time.

Review

I have mixed feelings about this show so I will start with the positive as usual.

The show had a lot of positive LGBTQ role models in it and, for example, the one between Phaya and Tharn you are unlikely would see on some western shows. I believe that what attracts people to these Thai shows and there are many of them.

The cinematography is good as well as the gorgeous colours displayed of Thai culture.

There was a good element of humour supplied by actors Tack Phongsakorn Sukiang [แทค พงศกร สุเกียง] and Gap Jakarin Puribhat [แก๊ป จักริน ภูริพัฒน์].

The action sequences were choreographed quite well.

I think they had a story and continuity issue. The duration of the episodes were too long for the story and this required the actors to gaze into nowhere for a while. Some of the actors were not good at…gazing. The child actors were better than some of the adults.

The story of Tharn and Phaya’s previous incarnations could have been written better, it was difficult to assess what was going on. The actor who played the Doctor just wasn’t right for that role, needed someone who looked more threatening.

There was a missed opportunity to highlight some of other non-main characters which could have padded out the gaps.

When I said the actions sequences were good there was an issue with guns going off, the sound effects they chose didn’t match.

The special episode 13 was very well written and worked well within its extra length time. I wish some of the other episodes could have been like that.

Summary

We watched the uncut version so I don’t know if the regular one is better, maybe give that a go if you want to watch it. I would give this show 2.5/5.

Billy and Babe are back together in a new show, released in 2025, called Interminable. It finished in January.
