I decided to move web hosts and even change my domain name, something I’ve been wanting to do for some years.
I wanted a host based in Canada, with a .ca top level domain, for political and privacy reasons. My old host main data center was based in Texas USA, with no offerings in Canada. The US is not somewhere I feel safe hosting right now especially with the current political situation. With regard to privacy they hosted with Google Cloud whom I also didn’t trust.
Price was also a factor especially now in my retirement years. My new host is not only half the price but also offers things I miss such as cPanel. It is also good to support local businesses that is literately a short drive away.
I changed the design of my website to a more simplistic one making use of newer features in the theme. I migrated everything across by hand, no automating involved, reviewing every post I had written. There were some posts I just deleted since they were outdated and looking back not sure why I even wrote them.
Also, since I am retired but only doing voluntary work, I deleted most of my career information.
I did at one point consider moving from WordPress to Ghost, now that it is more integrated with the Fediverse, but I had invested so much into the former that I decided to go with that. I love the features in my current WordPress theme although can be heavy on the speed of my site.
I am looking forward to this fresh start.
